Range Rover Hybrid and Sport Hybrid SUV’s were finally released into the market. Two British creations are the first in the world luxury diesel-electric SUVs. However, for now the manufacturer presented only the older from two brothers. Land Rover Company revealed the information about its first serial double-powered SUVs that were announced this spring. Range Rover along with Range Rover Sport, as planned earlier, got similar diesel-electric power plant. It consists of 3.0 liter SDV6 turbo-diesel and 35-hp powered electric engine that are supplemented with an eight speed automatic transmission. Overall top capacity of such system gets to the point of 340 hp and 700 N / m of torque. Such plant allows the bigger Rover accelerate up to 100 km/hour speed in less than 7 seconds (6.9 to be exact) and Sport version can brag with its 6.7 seconds index.
On the pure electric mode SUV is able to drive for 1 mile (1.6 km) with the speed of 48 km/hour. When such parameters are exceeded, diesel engine is turned on.
New hybrid system (lithium-ion batteries, inverter and electric engine) weights less than 120 kg. Its appearance didn’t worsen the all-terrain qualities of the vehicles ( their geometric passability in particular) and didn’t shorten the space of trunk or rear seats.
It didn’t even affect the presence of a spare wheel. The secret is simple, the introduction of such system was placed in the construction of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport from the very start of their development.
To demonstrate the capacities of the new cars, their creators start an expedition from Solihull, Land Rovers home, to Mumbai, the home of the parent company Tata. The length of the race is 16.000 km and includes crossing 12 countries. Partially such route will go through “Silk Way” that once connected Asia with Mediterranean. The finish of this crazy and impressive journey is planned on 15th of October. British managers say that hybrid vehicles will become the first in the world to try pass such difficult route.
