German engineers have published key parameters of their new hybrid vehicle, which premiere will happen this fall in Frankfurt. The sales of this car will start in next year.
Four-door S 500 Plug-in Hybrid is the third hybrid in the line of S-class (after the petrol version of S 400 Hybrid and diesel version of S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid) and is the most dynamic and economical vehicle at the same time. Well, the economical part could be explained with the hybrid engine and battery’s presence. In a standard NEDC cycle including the part of the road when it moves on electric batteries, S 500 Plug-in Hybrid shows the consumption of 3 liters per 100 km and ejects 69 grams of CO2 per 1 km. Such numbers could be considered a great achievement for the city-car in the A segment 10-15 years ago.
In comparison, new S 400 Hybrid sedan spends 6.3 liters per 100 km and the S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid model – 4.4 liters per 100 km.
The company promises that the capacity of the battery that is installed in this car is 10 times higher than the similar versions that are compatible with ordinary sockets. This, along with some other benefits, allows to turn the climate control on before the driver and passengers enter the vehicle. Power plant consists of petrol 3.0 V6 engine with turbocharger that provides 245 hp of power and is integrated with electric motor with 80 hp of power. Maximum torque gets to the point of 480 N / m on the petrol engine and is supplemented with 340 N / m from the electric plant. That’s why it is not surprising at all that the acceleration time to gain 100 km/hour speed takes 5.5 seconds and maximum speed is electronically limited at the 250 km/hour level.
Hybrid power plant from Mercedes is also equipped with intellectual control system that works for driver’s benefit. It gets the information about next 8 km of road from the navigation system and builds a driving strategy based on the roads conditions. This is another reason why this vehicle doesn’t spend that much fuel compared to its predecessors.
